PUR estimates of acres planted for spinach are highly variable due to errors in the original data, double counting and the planting of more than one crop per year in a single field. For crops with a growing season that spans two calendar years, "acres planted" calculated from the PUR data may be higher than actual acreage because acreage for a single crop will be counted in both years. Some fields may also be used to grow two crops in a single year, in which case the reported acres planted is less than the actual acreage. In 1997, California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) estimated spinach acreage at 7,100 acres. The PUR estimate is 33,000 acres.
